Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielyus Landsbergis on Friday, December 10, announced that he had written a letter of resignation due to the ongoing transit of Belarusian goods.
“Seeing the current situation related to the continued transportation of Belarusian goods through Lithuania after the sanctions imposed by the US, and understanding what reputational challenges this creates for the government of the Republic of Lithuania headed by you I ask you to accept my resignation letter and dismiss me from the post of Minister of Foreign Affairs as soon as possible for you, ”the delfi.lt portal quotes the text of Landsbergis’s statement.
A day earlier, Landsbergis told reporters that he was ready to resign because of the scandal with the ongoing transit of Belaruskali through Lithuania.
On December 9, it became known that the Minister of Transport also resigned.
On December 2, the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom introduced a new package of sanctions against Belarus. In particular, the Belarusian Potash Company, Transaviaexport, Slavkali and Beltechexport, as well as the Belavia airline fell under the sanctions.
Thus, the operations with the Belarusian company Belaruskali were supposed to end before December 8. But in December, the company “Lithuanian Railways” continued the transit of Belarusian products through the territory of Lithuania, as they had already received an advance payment.
