The president was concerned about the disqualification of the main opposition leader, María Corina Machado.

President Luis Lacalle Pou referred to the disqualification of María Corina Machado, main opposition leader Venezuela, and stated that “we are not facing elections free and democratic” in that country.

The president was once again critical in this way of the government he heads Nicolás Maduro, pointing out that the decision of the Supreme Court of that country shows that “there is no desire for it to be a transparent election where everyone can compete.”

When asked at a press conference, Lacalle Pou He maintained that “more than concern, we have said more than once what we think of the government of Venezuela” and summarized: “We do not say gre-gre to say Gregorio. Both in opposition, and when he had to assume Ripe in the meetings we have had.”

“I don’t know what that is called depending on the political color, but clearly we are not facing free and democratic elections in Venezuela”, ruled on the matter.

Machado was disqualified for 15 years

Machado was disqualified by the Supreme justice court (TSJ) of Venezuela on January 26, ratifying a 15-year sentence that prevents him from competing in the elections scheduled for the second half of this year, something that earned the repudiation of the Uruguayan Foreign Ministry, amid the growth of the migrant population from that country.

Through a ruling from the Political-Administrative Chamber, the court declared inadmissible the request for precautionary protection introduced by the former liberal deputy, who hoped that this sanction would be lifted through this case review mechanism, agreed upon between the government and the opposition. Democratic Unitary Platform (PUD).

It is worth remembering that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs already issued a statement in which it expressed its “great concern” about this situation, considering that it “directly attacks the holding of free, democratic and competitive elections.”
