The Kenya Red Cross said on Friday on the short message service X, formerly Twitter, that 271 people had been taken to hospitals. Another 27 people were treated on site.
Numerous firefighters were deployed in the Embakasi district to extinguish the flames, as a journalist from the AFP news agency reported on site. Thick black smoke rose.
Kenyan government spokesman Isaac Maigua Mwaura wrote on X that a company was refilling gas cylinders when the fire broke out. The company’s building was badly damaged. The cause of the accident is still unclear.
