150 years after the merger, place names are still alive

The author is Willibald Mayrhofer from Feldkirchen, who headed the area of family and manorial historical sources in the state archive and has now retired after 40 years.

Large congregation founded

On December 9th, 1875, the constituent meeting of the “large congregation” Feldkirchen, formed from seven small congregations, some of which were very poor, took place. The “Obderennsische Landesausschuss”, the predecessor of the Landtag, probably took the parish borders as a model for this new municipality, which is one of the largest municipalities in the Urfahr district in terms of area and population. These are the then independent communities Mühllacken, Bergheim, Feldkirchen, Freudenstein, Lacken, Landshaag and Mühldorf. All critics of upcoming community mergers who fear for the identity of the individual should be written in the register: These names still live on in the cadastral communities today.

Of knights and shipmen

The eventful history of the former Freudenstein Castle, the Bergheim, Mühldorf or Pesenbach castles, aristocratic seats, free seats and knightly fiefs, important noble families and their seats in Feldkirchen and their coats of arms, the former poor house Mühldorf, the Danube and their ship mills and the village fire in 1864 make up the Main part of the easy-to-read book. Bernhard Prokisch’s article about the once important Oberwallsee Castle, which today is largely in ruins, is authentic. Daughter Katharina Prokisch deals with the prehistoric finds in the municipality. “Feldkirchen an der Donau: A stroll through history” was published on 224 pages under ISBN 978-3-902801-40-1. It is available for 24 euros from the postal partner in Feldkirchen and in Upper Austria. Landesarchiv, orders can be made by email to landesarchiv@ooe.gv.at
