On Thursday night, around 4:30 a.m., the 51-year-old and his 49-year-old wife were woken up by smoke coming from the electric blanket. The man from Mühlviertel then threw the blanket, which had already turned black, along with his mattress onto the balcony on the upper floor – believing that the danger had been averted. Then the couple went to sleep again on the ground floor.

At 6:50 a.m., however, they had a rude awakening: the two of them were woken up by the noise of fire. The wooden facade of the house had already caught fire. Together with their 24-year-old son, the couple were able to extinguish the fire before the fire brigades arrived – in addition to the FF St. Martin, comrades from Plöcking and Neuhaus-Untermühl also arrived. A 27-year-old neighbor also rushed to help with a fire extinguisher.

The couple was taken to Rohrbach Hospital. The cause of the fire is clearly a technical defect in the electric blanket, according to the police; the exact extent of the damage is not yet known.
