Under the slogan “environmental justice,” scientists discuss questions of the distribution of resources and burdens – for example, poor societies tend to be more affected by environmental pollution than rich ones, even though they cause the damage. In a “poster session” students from the master’s degree programs in political education and sociology at the JKU dealt with this problem area. They worked out case studies of various examples and summarized them on a poster.

Renate Demmel-Wölbitsch won the “Best Poster Award”. Her work focused on a settlement for Sinti and Roma that was built on a toxic waste dump on the outskirts of Hamburg in the early 1980s. She showed how social, ecological and spatial inequality interact. Other work involved, for example, the Gratkorn Mur power plant in Styria, which is expected to go into operation this year. It serves as an example of the conflict between global climate protection on the one hand and local environmental concerns on the other. Numerous works dealt with the global south. For example, students discussed cobalt production in the Congo, which takes place under inhumane and environmentally hazardous conditions.
