How satisfied are Upper Austrians with their living situation? The Upper Austrian Chamber of Labor (AKOÖ) investigated this question. This week the housing satisfaction index, presented for the first time in 2023, was published again. The basis is 4,000 surveys by telephone and online.

The overall index value was 69 points in the fourth quarter of 2023. 0 is the low end, 100 is the high end. There was no change compared to the third quarter of 2023.

Stress factors for housing and energy

Housing and energy costs are the biggest burden for Upper Austrians, says AKOÖ President Andreas Stangl. These expenditure areas account for up to 30 percent of income; in lower income brackets it is 40 percent or more. According to the AK survey, the average monthly rental price in Upper Austria is 750 euros, and the apartment is on average 75 square meters in size.

Stangl sees “room for improvement” in housing satisfaction and a need for political action. The advocacy group is calling for a housing bonus of up to 800 euros as an annual tax credit for tenants and homeowners, as well as more non-profit housing in the state.
