Around 17 percent of all hospitalized sick people did not survive. Of all those who died by the end of October, 54 percent were cared for exclusively in normal wards. 31 percent of the victims were cared for in intensive care units (ICU). 15 percent of the coronavirus sufferers died outside of state fund-financed hospitals, according to the updated data from the GÖG. The average age of the ICU patients had fallen to 56 years by September and rose again to 60 years for the patients discharged in October. The reduced average age previously meant that the length of stay in the intensive care units had decreased. So far, seriously ill infected people have spent an average of 13.3 days on ICUs. Most recently – June to September – this value sank to 11.8 days.
By the end of October there had been 65,099 inpatient hospital stays by 55,876 Covid-19 patients. Most of them were in the 80+ age group with 16,507. Of these, 32.8 percent died. 12,418 Covid-19 patients were 70 to 79 years old, 20.1 percent of those hospitalized in this age group died. Of the 60 to 69 year olds, 9,242 infected people had to be treated in hospital, of which 11.4 percent did not survive the infection. There were 7,986 hospital patients among the 50 to 59 year olds, of whom 4.7 percent died.
Since the beginning of the pandemic, 1.29 percent of people who tested positive for the coronavirus had to receive intensive care. Men had a significantly higher rate at 1.67 percent than women at 0.91 percent. Once again, the data show that the corona vaccination is working. The proportion of fully vaccinated patients who had to receive intensive medical care corresponds to the expected values. Most recently, vaccinated infected people made up 25.9 percent of ICU patients. According to GÖG, with the high vaccination coverage of the risk population – 83 percent of those over 60 years of age, they are representative of all intensive care patients with regard to the vaccination coverage – the vaccination is 93 percent effective compared to intensive care stays.
