The conflict between the US in Iraq and Syria
As stated by the White House, the US operation lasted about thirty minutes and they considered it “a success”, although they also emphasized that they do not want a “war” with Iran. In total, American forces attacked 85 objectives at seven different pointsfour in Syria and three in Iraq.
Currently, some 900 US soldiers are deployed in Syria and another 2,500 in Iraq as part of an international anti-jihadist coalition created to combat the group Islamic State (IS)which almost ten years ago came to control large areas of both countries.
Although the defeat of IS was announced in 2017 in Iraq and 2019 in Syria, the coalition remained to fight jihadist cells who continue to carry out attacks.
Since mid-October, More than 165 drone and rocket attacks targeted US forces deployed in Iraq and Syriabut no American servicemen had died until the January 28 attack.
The truth is that these attacks have multiplied since the start of the war in Gaza between Hamas and Israel on October 7, all claimed mostly by the organization “Islamic Resistance in Iraq.”
