Tschofenig surprised with fourth place in Willingen – Wellinger won

With sixth place, World Cup leader Stefan Kraft limited the damage on the botched Willingen weekend. The best Austrian jumper on Sunday, despite the difficult wind conditions and rain, was not the ski flying world champion, but Daniel Tschofenig in fourth place. The Carinthian was 1.9 points short of the podium. Andreas Wellinger celebrated a home win two points ahead of tour winner Ryoyu Kobayashi, while the Swiss Gregor Deschwanden came third.

While things didn’t go well for Kraft in the Sauerland, Tschofenig returned impressively from his personal break with fourth (137.5 m/151) and sixth places. “The jumps were at a very good level. I fought back well in the last few days and weeks.” Jan Hörl (12th) lost places in the final. Michael Hayböck ended up in 15th place. The Pole Aleksander Zniszczol (POL), who was leading at half time, fell back to eighth place.

“Strenuous for the nerves”

Kraft was happy that Willingen is now over. “It was very tiring on the nerves. You definitely needed a bit of luck. I’m fairly satisfied with today’s performance,” said the Salzburg player. In general he doesn’t particularly like the Mühlenkopfschanze (HS 147). He only landed on the podium there once (2/2017). “I’m really looking forward to Lake Placid now,” said Kraft.

With a headwind at the jump and an immense upwind afterwards, the wind point system was sometimes reduced to absurdity. After just one jump, the competition was over for Manuel Fettner (123 m) and Daniel Huber (112). Kraft, who missed qualifying for the second round in 39th place on Saturday, had to wait a long time as the last on the beam – and kept the damage limited as he finished sixth at halftime. While Wellinger, who attacked from a similar position, jumped to victory, Kraft was unable to make the decision. Kraft’s lead in the overall World Cup melted to 178 points.
