Was it just a turbulent game between two traditional clubs – or is German football heading towards a bigger problem? The big game in the second division between Hertha BSC and Hamburger SV (final score 1:2) was interrupted for more than 30 minutes due to a fan protest. Tennis balls repeatedly flew onto the lawn as soon as the referee wanted to continue the match.

This game was repeated until the referee sent the teams to the dressing room after more than 25 minutes and there was a threat of abandonment – although after the game it was communicated by the fans that they would also accept a abandonment of the game in order to get on to draw attention to your own concerns.

The background: An election was recently repeated in the German Football League (DFL) to open up the possibility of bringing a foreign investor into the league boat. In the first attempt there was no majority among the 36 clubs in the first and second leagues, but in the second attempt in November 2023 there was. Many fans are now protesting against this across all clubs.

Games are repeatedly interrupted by tennis balls being thrown onto the field. While most games could be resumed after five or six minutes, this time in Berlin they were actually on the verge of abandonment.

Coach was sent ahead

Hertha BSC coach Pal Dardai was sent forward to discuss with the fans in the corner. In the end the game was finished. However, in a conversation with the players after the final whistle, it was already announced that these protest demonstrations would continue in the future and also spread to other clubs. On Sunday, after 40 minutes of the game between Hanover and Rostock, only 22 minutes had actually been played.
