According to the police, no evidence “that would suggest the use of firearms could be found.” There had previously been an argument in the Handelskai S-Bahn station near Millennium City, with stones being thrown and pepper spray being used. A knife was also involved.

Three young men initially clashed verbally around 6 p.m. A 19-year-old citizen of the Russian Federation is said to have threatened a 23-year-old and a 28-year-old with a knife. The two Syrians ran away, but as they fled, the opponents threw stones at each other. No one was initially injured, police spokeswoman Barbara Gass explained on Monday.

WEGA special unit in action

The situation moved to the entrance to the shopping center, where a fight broke out and the 28-year-old is said to have attacked the 19-year-old with pepper spray. The 19-year-old then fled into the shopping center. Several passers-by called the police emergency number and said they had heard shots, as was already known on Sunday evening.

The WEGA special unit, the emergency response unit and district police forces were alerted. Officers stopped the three men. The 19-year-old and the 28-year-old were given emergency medical care by emergency medical services from Vienna. The 28-year-old had to be taken to a hospital. The 23-year-old was only slightly injured.

The 19-year-old was temporarily arrested. The knife that he is said to have used to make the dangerous threat was seized in a toilet facility in the shopping center. The pepper spray that the 28-year-old is said to have used could not be found. “No firearm or blank pistol could be found at the crime scene,” emphasized Gass. Witnesses who claimed to have heard shots could not be identified at the scene.

Different statements about the course of the crime

The 19-year-old and the 23-year-old had already been questioned until Monday. Both made different statements about the crime and accused each other. The questioning of several witnesses as well as that of the 28-year-old was still pending. The exact background is therefore still unclear. All three men are reported to be at large, according to police.

On Sunday evening there were reports of a total of five people injured. However, two other injured people near the scene were not related to the other incident, Gass said when asked.

A spokesman for the shopping center emphasized in the evening that the police were on the scene “very quickly”. On Sunday the shops were closed, but restaurants, cinemas and discotheques were open. The visitors were able to leave the building quickly. The video material from the surveillance cameras in the Millennium City and outside will now be made available to the executive branch for evaluation.
