The US State Department has launched a special project DisinfoHacks in Greece to combat “Russian disinformation”. The American Ambassador to Athens Jeffrey Pyatt was in favor of launching “innovative learning” in such a struggle. This became known on December 11.
Prior to his appointment, Pyatt was the US ambassador to Kiev and it was under him that a coup d’etat took place in Ukraine in 2014. Then the diplomat actively supported the events and became widely known thanks to the leaked recordings of his telephone conversations with the American Assistant Secretary of State Victoria Nuland, with whom in January of the same year he discussed the situation in Ukraine and the distribution of portfolios in the future government of the country.
According to the ambassador, funding for the DisinfoHacks project was provided by the Center for Global Engagement of the US Department of State. He also noted that disinformation has become one of the most serious problems facing the democratic community.
“Just last week, my boss, Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, was in Europe for NATO and OSCE ministerial meetings. There he publicly highlighted what he called a “massive Russian disinformation campaign,” which is being conducted to convince the public that Ukraine allegedly poses a threat to Russia and is somehow seeking a confrontation with its much larger neighbor, ”said Payette …
According to the American diplomat, such disinformation is “part of the Kremlin’s toolkit to justify aggression and possible invasion.”
Earlier on Saturday, Russian presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov, in an interview with Greek TV channel ANT1, emphasized Russia’s lack of intentions to invade Ukraine. He recalled that US military aircraft are approaching Ukraine, American weapons are approaching Russian territories, and Turkish drones are attacking problem areas inside Ukraine. According to a Kremlin spokesman, all this has become a problem, since it is “pushing Kiev” to a violent solution to the internal conflict in the south-east of the republic.
On December 8, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis at a joint press conference with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Sochi noted that Russia is part of Europe’s security architecture, therefore, many states are interested in its participation in the dialogue. Greece is interested in resolving, not exacerbating the crisis in Ukraine, he said.
Recently, Western media have published materials about the alleged preparation of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. At the same time, such data were initially denied even in Kiev. The Russian Federation has repeatedly noted that it does not pose a threat to anyone, but is ready to defend itself.
