Manuel Reischl was given a big reception at the Hubinger Inn. Family, friends and the entire Esternberg community rejoiced with him last week. At the continental curling championships, which took place this year from January 27th to 28th in the natural ice arena on Lake Goggausee in Carinthia, the 38-year-old Esternberger made a big impression and “shot” Austria in the team rankings his three colleagues to the European Championship title.
16 countries fought for the medals, the Austrians ultimately came out on top against the big favorites from Italy, Germany and Slovenia. “We knew that we had a chance of winning the title if everyone brought their performance to the track,” says Reischl. “It’s even nicer when it actually works.”
Intensive training
The Esternberger is a repeat offender: He was already able to win gold in the team competition for Austria in 2009. After the runner-up title last year, the crowning came again this year.
“Such success can never be taken for granted. National qualification alone is a challenge every year. After all, only four stick shooters from each country are allowed to take part in the big tournament,” says Reischl, who invests many hours of training in his free time to ensure his place at the top of Austria to keep.
The master automotive technician completes different training sessions five to six times a week: The 38-year-old works on his basic fitness in the weight room and with endurance sports, and of course he gets the finishing touches on the track. The successful stick shooter has been practicing this sport regularly and intensively since he was 16 years old.
After more than two decades in sport, the Esternberger’s medal cabinet is already well filled with eight medals at major international events and countless titles at national championships, but Reischl is still missing gold in the individual at a European Championship or World Cup. So it’s a good thing that the World Championships will take place in Kapfenberg (Styria) next year. “The big goal is to win gold individually and defend the team title,” says the ambitious athlete from Sauwald, setting the course.
