The two men, 25 and 39 years old, were rescued by the Libelle Kärnten police helicopter via Taubergung and flown to Franz-Josefs-Höhe, where they were picked up by the crew of a rescue helicopter, the police said in a release.

The two mountaineers made an emergency call on Sunday evening and stated that they had been injured by a falling rock on the Großglockner north face. But they still managed to reach the Glockner bivouac.

Because of the storm, the two alpinists could not be reached and rescued by helicopter on Sunday or Monday. The mountain rescue team had also refrained from climbing – it would have taken hours and they were in contact with the two injured people via cell phone. The well-equipped mountaineers stated that they could have stayed in the bivouac for longer.

The Glockner bivouac was built in 2020 and replaced older accommodation. It stands elevated on a tubular steel frame on solid rock on a hump of a ridge at 3,205 meters above sea level. It normally offers space for 15 people, but can also accommodate several in an emergency. But the simple “container” is anything but a “romantic excursion destination,” emphasizes the Alpine Club – the bivouac is rather a safe haven for mountaineers in distress.
