She welcomed the agreement by EU negotiators in the Parliament and Council of Member States on the new 50 billion euro package for Ukraine. The first funds could flow from this from March. But she also called for more resources for military defense.
The EU heads of state and government finalized the package at their special summit last week. The money is primarily intended to support the Ukrainian state in financing the operation of hospitals or schools. In addition, the infrastructure destroyed by the Russian war of aggression should be rebuilt. The EU Parliament will vote on the package at its next plenary session at the end of February. A clear majority in favor is considered assured.
40,000 soldiers trained
“So far we have trained over 40,000 Ukrainian soldiers. The Union and its member states have mobilized military equipment worth 28 billion euros. The European defense industry has increased its ammunition production capacity by 40 percent,” said von der Leyen. Next month the EU will have delivered around half a million ammunition – but this will miss the original target of one million.
Von der Leyen also emphasized that not enough has been done so far. “Looking forward, we must understand Ukraine’s defense capability as our own defense capability. We must view Ukraine’s defense industry as part of our own defense industry.” That is why Ukraine is included in the preparations of the EU strategy for the defense industry: “Ukraine is a future member of our European Union. That is why it must also move closer to us in the defense sector.”
