The port of Linz is on the move: This applies not only to ships and containers, but also to the area itself – this was most recently visible with the opening of the publicly accessible harbor park at a height of 18 meters.
Today the groundbreaking ceremony officially took place for another project that is intended to bring visible changes and, above all, security. This refers to the planned package of measures to protect against a 300-year flood. The damage that floods can cause was most recently clearly seen in the area during the floods in 2013.
In order not to have to experience this again, around 40 million euros are now being invested, 14 million euros come from the Climate Ministry and 8.5 million euros from the state. The EU is also a funding provider with 11.8 million euros. The remaining 5.6 million euros are borne by Linz Service GmbH (a subsidiary of Linz AG) and JMT Beteiligungs-GmbH. The heart of the package of measures is the installation of a flood protection gate in the area of the container terminal operations building on Saxingerstrasse.

The sliding gate with a passage width of 26 meters from Andritz is the first of its kind in Austria, emphasized Linz AG General Director Erich Haider. The new flood protection will protect the port area (130 hectares), the adjacent industrial area (430 hectares) right up to the inner city district.
The steel structure of the port gate weighs around 200 tons, and the port entrance must be closed from July to a maximum of mid-November 2024 for assembly. During this time, supplies and deliveries will be shifted to rail.
Completion by mid-2025
In addition to the port gate, a 300 meter long emergency berm will also be built in the southern area of the entrance to the commercial port. In addition – following the flood gate – the existing flood protection dam will be upgraded over a length of 700 meters upstream, and arrangements will be made for mobile flood protection downstream. All work is expected to be completed by mid-2025.
For Climate Minister Leonore Gewessler (Greens), the package of measures closes an important gap along the Danube in Upper Austria. With the climate crisis, extreme weather events are becoming more frequent, and in addition to climate protection measures, measures to adapt to climate change are also needed. Flood protection plays a central role: for the population as well as for the functionality of the Danube waterway and for the surrounding businesses.

State Governor Thomas Stelzer (VP) emphasized that the port is an important international hub and that having modern, state-of-the-art flood protection here is extremely important. As State Environment Councilor Stefan Kaineder (Greens) put it, this protects “central industrial infrastructure”.
Mayor Klaus Luger (SP) also spoke of “forward-looking security of the location” and said the port is now a unique meeting place for business, leisure and the public. The wish of all speakers at the end: a successful and accident-free construction period.
