“We are a country in which most of the people adhere to the law,” said Scholz of “Bild am Sonntag”, according to prior notification. “Not because the police control us everywhere. But because it is part of our nature that we obey such rules.”
The Bundestag will discuss the details of a vaccination against the corona virus, which is mandatory for everyone. “In any case, as a member of parliament, I will vote for compulsory vaccination because it is legally permissible and morally correct.” For nursing staff and medical professions, the Bundestag and Bundesrat had already decided on Friday that vaccinations should be mandatory from spring.
In the fight against Corona, Scholz considers all means. “There must be no red lines, this pandemic has really shown us that,” said the Chancellor of the newspaper. “We always have to be ready to rethink when circumstances require it. And then act quickly and decisively.” He also did not categorically reject a Christmas lockdown: “The federal and state governments have just taken very rigid measures. We will check every day how they are implemented and whether they are sufficient.”
Scholz denied a split in society due to Corona: “Germany is not split!” The vast majority of citizens would have been vaccinated. Many more wanted to do it soon because they had overcome their concerns, said the SPD politician. “Having different opinions doesn’t mean division. We can also argue.” The head of government emphasized: “I want to hold the country together. And so I am also the chancellor of the unvaccinated. I would like to convince them of the point of vaccination.”
According to Scholz, there are very few unvaccinated people who aggressively acted out their resistance to the corona regulations: “I am convinced that the vast majority of unvaccinated people find these torch rallies just as disgusting as I do.” He announced a zero tolerance policy against demonstrators who gathered for torchlight marches and threatened politicians. “We must counter these threats with the utmost severity.”
Scholz also wants to hold regular talks with the citizens. The SPD politician told “Bild am Sonntag”: “We plan regular encounters, face-to-face or in digital formats. Incidentally, I also benefit from the conversation with citizens, because it grounds me and I gain a lot of additional insights.” But he will keep his dry manner. “I won’t change my sober nature any more,” he said.
In his own words, Scholz wants to restore optimism to the people in Germany. “My goal as Chancellor is for everyone to answer by the end of the decade: Yes, it went well for me.” Unfortunately, many citizens have not been quite sure for a long time whether their future will be better. “That is not good, it endangers the cohesion in our society. We need more confidence again.”
