It is a political solidarity across party lines and between the state and city of Linz, which is intended to effectively and permanently defuse a problem area in the city center.

The wishes of the population around the Volksgarten are on the table (the OÖN reported), now the popular park should become what it should actually be: a natural and recreational space for everyone.

More on the subject: How the residents really see the Linz Volksgarten

At the presentation of the redesign of the Volksgarten on Wednesday, everyone involved focused on what they had in common. Mayor Klaus Luger (SP) spoke of proof of the public sector’s ability to act. State Councilor for Social Affairs Wolfgang Hattmannsdorfer (VP) sees the Volksgarten as a “prime example of urban social policy and social work”. The project, which was developed by social workers from Volkshilfe and the city’s public order service, is exemplary.

For City Councilor Eva Schobesberger (Greens) there is an opportunity to make the Volksgarten a place where everyone feels comfortable. And city councilor Michael Raml (FP) is confident that the measures, which are to be gradually implemented from March this year, will move the Volksgarten away from the “dream of fear”.

The measures in detail

The “extremely problematic situation” (Luger) along the Goethekreuzung tram stop will be eliminated. The long benches behind the stop will be removed from the beginning of March.

To compensate, eight to ten benches will be set up south of the chess facility in the Volksgarten, as well as trash cans and tables that are made by the users themselves as part of the social project. This is intended to give the group of around 30 people, alcoholics and addicts as well as homeless people, a place in the Volksgarten where they can be among themselves. This is intended to reduce the potential for conflict between these people, who are on the margins of society, and the park users. It is important that everyone involved is included in the solution process.

New mobile toilet

An additional drinking water fountain is to be installed in the Volksgarten by summer, and another mobile toilet facility is also to be built.

After the benches have been removed, the green spaces in this area will be temporarily restored. New flower beds in spring, the removal of traces of the Christmas market and the renovation of the entire entrance area should make the transition from the country road to the park more attractive again.

Ultimately, a refresh of the playground is also planned. This inclusive playground is being realized with the involvement of experts and clubs. This is also intended to show that those politically responsible want to expand the uses in the Volksgarten.

Problem area lighting

A problem that is still open, but which fuels the uneasy feeling of the population in the park, especially in the evening and at night, is the poor lighting. There will soon be talks with the responsible deputy mayor, Martin Hajart (VP), in order to make the park brighter and therefore emotionally safer. For security officer Raml, this doesn’t mean lighting up the park all night long, but rather using technical options such as motion detectors to make it brighter and friendlier.

By the way: How cyclists and e-scooter users will be treated in the Volksgarten is still unclear. The population has also identified these two groups of road users as dangerous when they “rush” through the park.
