EU Parliament for new genetic engineering

The EU Commission wants to liberalize new methods of genetic engineering.

The EU Parliament has voted for relaxed rules for new genetic engineering in plant breeding. As reported, the EU Commission’s proposed law stipulates that some new processes do not fall under the strict genetic engineering rules. 307 MPs voted for, 263 against, 41 abstained. The majority of Austrian representatives rejected the project. Negotiations with the Council now follow. However, the EU agriculture ministers do not yet have a common position.
