Curate Josef Grafeneder celebrated his 90th with a mass. The long-time pastor of Münzbach, Josef Grafeneder, celebrated his 90th birthday on Tuesday. To mark this occasion, a celebratory mass was organized on Wednesday, celebrated by dean Konrad Hörmanseder and Augustinian canon Johann Fürst from Mauthausen. With this mass, the parish of Münzbach managed to surprise their pastor. The church decoration team led by Karin Slawiczek built an ornamental arch at the entrance to the rectory. In front of the altar, a bound “90s” and a handmade book with a personal poem decorated the church interior. Leopoldine Schützenberger Leopoldine made her own candle for the anniversary.
The service also had a personal touch: the choir sang the “Hoamatmesse” written by Grafeneder in the dialect and composed by Hermann Kronsteiner. Choir director Karl Strasser accompanied the choir on an electric harmonium donated by Curate Grafeneder decades ago. This instrument was one of the first of its kind at the time.
After the mass, we met for breakfast in Sonja Lettner’s “Loisl” department store, where a few songs were also performed.
Josef Grafeneder was born in 1934 in St. Nikola an der Donau. In 1958 he was ordained a priest and from 1963 he worked as a pastor in Mitterkirchen. From 1990 to 2014 he worked as a pastor in Münzbach, where he has since then worked as a temporary curate.
Josef Grafeneder was already active as a dialect poet and writer when he was still at school. On the occasion of his diamond jubilee as a priest in 2018, he recently published the book “The Light of Christmas” with poems and stories from the Advent and Christmas seasons – a collection from his creative period from 1958 to 2017.
In Münzbach, a number of building projects bear the signature of curate Josef Grafeneder. The well-known “Richter Organ” was also brought back to life under his leadership.
