Together with three colleagues, the man had been working on forestry work on the Hölblingkogel since January 16th. The 46-year-old was felling a spruce tree with a chainsaw around 10:30 a.m. To do this, he sawed a 15 centimeter deep cut in the valley side of the tree to allow it to fall down the valley.
But that wasn’t to happen: due to strong winds, the spruce tree tipped uphill and the interface slid towards the valley. The 46-year-old – like his colleagues, very experienced forestry workers – was dragged away by the branches and remained seriously injured.

His colleagues, who were working a few meters away, immediately alerted the emergency services. The conditions for the rescue were extremely difficult for the Red Cross Mondsee teams in the approximately 35 degree steep terrain. After being treated by the emergency doctor, the seriously injured man was transported safely to the forest road and flown with the rescue helicopter under resuscitation to the Salzburg State Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries a short time later.
The police found no evidence of foul play.
