The Port of Montevideo consolidates the record cruise season, with an increase of 11%

The National Ports Administration reported that four simultaneous stopovers were recorded this Wednesday, with more than 7,000 passengers.

He Port of Montevideo expects an 11% year-on-year increase in the arrival of cruise ships during this season that will be a record, according to data from the National Port Administration (ANP).

A faithful testimony of this situation was what happened this Wednesday, when four cruise ships in the port, something that will happen on two other occasions in the season that will end in April, as anticipated by the vice president of the ANP, Daniel Loureiro.

“It is the first event of three in which four stops will coincide simultaneously and then we will have three cruises at the same time for three days,” he said. Loureiro after the arrival of the ships MSC Preziosa, Silver Nova, Sapphire Princess and Azamara Quest, which together add up to a total of 7,630 passengers.

“It is the materialization of the 11% increase in the scales that the Port of Montevideo in this cruise season,” highlighted the leader when referring to the 166 planned stops, compared to 149 last season.

Greater availability of public docks in the Port of Montevideo

When evaluating the reasons for the growth of cruise tourism, Loureiro was “very satisfied with having achieved greater availability of public docks”, something that helps “the Port of Montevideo becomes what we believe to be its destiny: a multipurpose port.”

“Before, cruise ship activity competed with containers on public docks and affected the development of the industry. Now, this greater availability allows us to visualize other types of port businesses,” he compared.

Finally, the vice president of the ANP highlighted the arrival of vessels that leave for the Antarctica. “The different owners of Antarctic and expedition ships are choosing the port for its facilities to prepare ships that sail to Antarctic waters in the summer season,” he said.
