Health officer and deputy mayor Klaus Schinninger (SP) sees an “urgent need for action,” he said in a press release. He criticizes Deputy Mayor Gerhard Kroiß (FP), according to whom there were no reports of violations. “In recent weeks and months we have received an increasing number of complaints from Wels residents pointing to violations of the legal ban on smoking in nightclubs,” says Schinninger.

Explosive photo emerged
The health officer describes a photo that an FPÖ local councilor posted on Facebook as a “peak of impudence”. The mandatary then poses with several people in a bar. What appears to be a burning cigarette can be seen in an ashtray on the table. Schinninger sent a screenshot to the Welser Zeitung. According to Schinninger, Kroiß is “duty to take active action against such violations of the law and to ensure compliance with the smoking ban in bars.” He calls on Kroiß to “act quickly and decisively.”

Kroiß passes the ball back: “If colleague Schinninger has been receiving reports for months, why hasn’t he brought it up?” He himself is responsible for the district administration and therefore for issuing penalties for violations. “Taking preventative action is a classic matter for the health officer. If he sees a need for action, then he should take action himself,” says Kroiß.
