Are you going on vacation with your family during the semester break? You are (unfortunately) not the only one. As always during the holidays, heavy traffic and delays must be taken into account when planning your trip.

It is therefore advisable to be well prepared for longer car journeys with children. ÖAMTC traffic psychologist Marion Seidenberger knows how: “If you are prepared for all eventualities such as hunger and thirst, boredom or even nausea and plan the route well, the hours in the car are much more relaxed.”

Plan entertainment and stops
According to experts, the following tips should be taken into account when taking a long car trip with the whole family:
- Choose your travel time carefully: Especially if there are small children on board, the start of the trip should ideally be coordinated with their biorhythms. “When the little ones are asleep, larger stages can be completed in peace and quiet,” says Seidenberger.
- Avoid additional distractions: There is often a lot going on in the car with children – chattering, singing or listening to a radio play. “Parents should therefore avoid additional distractions and not take work into the car and make phone calls while driving. This is not only boring for children, but it is often difficult for them to sit still and be quiet at the same time,” says the expert.
- Plan stopovers: In order not to overwhelm children and drivers, intermediate stops should be made. The breaks provide an opportunity to exercise in the fresh air or visit sights along the route.
- Entertainment while driving: Children have a different perception of time – without something to do, they quickly get bored sitting quietly. Cuddly toys, art supplies and reading material should therefore be stored within easy reach in the back seat. Classic word and memory games or child-friendly game apps also make the trip more entertaining.
- Food: “Pack enough drinks and snacks,” advises the expert. “Every now and then a few pieces of fruit or even sweets lift the spirits – and not just for the children.”
- Nausea: To prevent nausea, children should not look down for too long during the journey (e.g. while reading) or not use a smartphone for the entire journey. Just looking out the window can usually help.
With these tips in mind, nothing stands in the way of a relaxed car journey.
