Be a pioneer and enable new forms of learning: that is the aim of the Leondinger Digital-Gymnasium. Today there were words of praise for this from the highest levels. For Education Minister Martin Polaschek (VP), the new offer takes into account the idea that schools should not only be places where lessons take place, but also playgrounds for ideas. “A unique educational concept is being implemented here,” he is completely convinced of Leonding’s plans.

At a time when digital technologies are playing an increasingly greater challenge, educational institutions must keep up with the times and “give students the necessary skills and tools,” said the minister at a press event in Leonding town hall.

More on the subject: Leonding gets a high school

State Governor Thomas Stelzer emphasized that the Digi-AHS was a valuable expansion of the training offering in Upper Austria, his deputy State Councilor for Education Christine Haberlander (both VP) emphasized that Leonding with its excellent concept (this was developed by the city together with the Upper Austrian University of Education). developed) and convinced by its central location. The offer is an important building block in getting girls interested in technology.

This is also reflected in the numbers: So far there have been 77 pre-registrations for the new school, around half of which come from girls. As announced, the high school will start operating in containers in the fall; these will be placed in the area of the asphalt track and the parking lot at the Leondinger HTL. At the start, up to four first grades (fifth grade) and up to two fifth grades (ninth grade) are planned. There is particularly great interest in the lower grades, and students are still wanted and welcome, especially in the upper grades.

Freestyle of the winning project in May

The city is investing around four million euros in the first school year, and the federal government is covering the 27 million euros budgeted for the new building. The architectural competition for the school building has already started and the winning project will be chosen in May, Mayor Sabine Naderer-Jelinek (SP) said yesterday. Construction is expected to begin in the fall and will be ready for occupancy by the start of the 2027/28 school year. It will be located at Limesstrasse 16, directly next to the HTL Leonding.

Director of Education Alfred Klampfer sees a lot of potential for synergies between the HTL and the AHS; the students expect an “interesting, content-rich” offering with a focus on digitalization. According to Naderer-Jelinek, this is characterized by a “playful and creative” approach. Practical learning is an important part of what the school offers, said Margit Steiner, project manager at PH Upper Austria, citing company internships as an example. In order to enable a “broad” education, the students in the lower school are taught cyber security, creativity, coding and laboratory. In the upper level there is the opportunity to specialize.

Andreas Riedl, the man at the helm of the new high school as director, was looking forward to the new challenge with the words “Digitalization concerns us all.” The Leondinger high school is a forward-looking project; after graduating, students are prepared for “all kinds of training,” says the education directorate’s current IT specialist inspector. Riedl is confident that there is a lot of interest in becoming part of this type of school and that he will be able to find enough teaching staff.

The AHS will initially be run by the city as a private school with public rights. Once the first year of high school graduation has been completed, the federal government will take over school maintenance and administration. Polaschek confirmed this plan today and the contracts are currently being drawn up in detail.
