EU citizens with a disability should be able to benefit from special conditions and preferential treatment anywhere in the EU. These included, for example, discounted tickets, assistance or access to reserved parking spaces.

In the future, the EU states must grant these special treatments to all holders of the EU disability card if they stay in the country for a period of up to three months or take part in an EU program such as Erasmus+. In addition, the states are free to decide whether they grant special conditions to all EU citizens or only to holders of a national disability card.

The SPÖ MP and Vice President of the EU Parliament Evelyn Regner welcomes the agreement. “The EU disability card is free and will be available in physical and digital versions,” she writes in a press release. “Our main concern is that all people in the EU can enjoy the EU’s fundamental freedoms without discrimination.”
