So that the plebiscite can be approved by the Electoral Court, The initiative should collect 10% of signatures from the total electoral roll, as established by the Constitution of Uruguay. With this they should obtain a total of 270,000 signatures before April 27.
However, Abdala assured that they expect the number of signatures to begin to accelerate starting in February. “We want to deliver around 500,000 signatures,” said the union leader.
Criticism of the government
Meanwhile, he criticized the government’s attitude which, according to Abdala, has the objective of imposing fear of the plebiscite. “It leaves us with some discomfort and we regret that the defenders of AFAP appeal to a campaign of fear, shake the cuckoo and make science fiction films about a reality that no one knows for sure what it will be like,” he said.
“Sometimes it seems as if they were unaware of the ballot and it has different nonsense that we really regret that level of discussion,” he added.
The plan of PIT-CNT
He PIT-CNT is preparing to begin the most active stage in the signature collection campaign to enable the plebiscite against social security reform in Uruguay.
“The idea is to target ‘operation return’ strongly, since although the signatures are coming out naturally, we are fine-tuning the procedures so that, precisely, those signatures reach the command of the PIT-CNT”, explained Carlos Calvijo, member of the workers’ representation team on the board of directors of the Social Security Bank (BPS).
The “operation return” refers to the actions that the union center is taking so that those signatures collected throughout the country through different mechanisms – such as plenary sessions, organizations and groups that go out touring, etc. – are sent and centralized in the PIT-CNT, “to have them tangibly.”
“That is what we have to work on a little more, because we believe that the signatures are there, they are being given easily,” considered the union member, and added that “the important thing is not only that the signatures are there, but that they reach the command for us digitize them and put them in a box and then, when April 26 arrives, deliver the signatures to the Electoral Court “all neat.”
