In no other community in the Ried district is the fifth season celebrated as much as in the carnival stronghold of Eberschwang. This became clear once again last weekend, because the first two carnival meetings of the carnival guild at the Kirchenwirt were filled to capacity and brought many laugh lines to the faces of the audience. The crowd was so large (330 people per meeting) that extra seats had to be created without further ado. “The many visitors who come to our meetings year after year are always a great confirmation of our work,” says Christopher Hörl, President of the Eberschwang Carnival Guild.
Lots of emotions
The two performances were particularly emotional for him: Hörl became a dad on Thursday and celebrated his own birthday on Saturday. “In between, I was on stage. It was stressful, but I really enjoyed it,” says Hörl.
Around 100 people on and behind the stage are responsible for ensuring that everything runs smoothly during the meetings. “We are a well-rehearsed team. Everyone knows what their tasks are and what needs to be done,” says Hörl. Sold-out carnival sessions have become the norm in Eberschwang. It is not self-evident that this is the case.
“Our aim is to inspire the audience so much that they come back. We don’t rest on our laurels, but rather come up with great new shows year after year, and we also do a lot of advertising. We achieve this above all through social media “The young people. There were a lot of young faces in the audience this year,” says Hörl. For Hörl, there is a very simple reason for the fact that there is generally extremely great interest in carnival this year – around 5,000 spectators came to the Ried carnival parade:
“Especially in turbulent times, people long for variety. We see our carnival sessions as a humorous refuge to escape everyday life for a while,” says the President. Wolfgang Huber celebrated a premiere this year, succeeding Walter Egger as program director. The first task of “Wagner Martina”, as Huber is known in cabaret circles, was to shorten the sessions slightly. “In recent years there has been isolated criticism that the meetings last too long – sometimes up to four hours. This year it ended after around 3.5 hours. The response to this was and is consistently positive,” says Hörl.
There will be two more carnival sessions on Friday and Saturday. Tickets are no longer available, once again it’s sold out!
