12 people go missing after gas explosion in Sicily

12 people, including three children and a pregnant woman, went missing after a gas explosion in the city of Ravanusa in the Sicilian province of Agrigento. This was reported on December 11 by the local newspaper Giornale di Sicilia.

According to preliminary data, a gas leak led to the explosion.

According to the newspaper, the explosion collapsed a four-story residential building and two neighboring buildings, covered by a shock wave due to a strong explosion. Some residents of the apartments managed to escape whole and get off with minor wounds.

At the scene of the explosion, where the fire continues, carabinieri, firefighters and an ambulance arrived. Also, three teams of volunteers came to Ravanusa. Electricity was cut in the entire area.

According to the Italian Civil Defense Service, “the gas pockets of the city network impede safe access to the rubble” and slow down rescue operations.

The mayor of Ravanusa called on the townspeople to help with the elimination of the consequences of the emergency by contacting the owners of tankers and special equipment, Corriere della Sera reports.

Earlier, on September 2, an explosion occurred in a residential building in the Rohrbach district in the federal state of Bavaria in southeastern Germany. It was noted that at least two people were injured, and two were reported missing.
