Exporters and the BCU seek to unblock payments from Argentine importers

The exporters Uruguayans continue to seek to advance solutions to unblock the payments of Argentine importers, in this framework, the president of the Union of Exporters of Uruguay (UEU), Facundo Márquezwas received to discuss the issue by the president of the Central Bank of Uruguay (BCU), Diego Labat.

This Thursday, UEU executives approached the BCU to discuss the problem with the president of the state body, as well as evaluate the possibilities that the Payment System in Local Currencies (SML) may have during the current context. In addition to Márquez, the person in charge of Economic Consulting, Communication and Sustainability, Maria Laura Rodriguez; and the Foreign Trade coordinatorMatías Camejo.

The previous week, the BCU had received representatives of the Chamber of Industries of Uruguay (CIU) to exchange points of view in the same sense.

Recently, Márquez assured Ambit who are optimistic about being able to pay off the commercial debt with Argentinaand that there is “a new climate” since the assumption of the Argentine President Javier Milei in December 2023. It is estimated that Argentine importers owe more than 100 million dollars in Uruguayan loans.

Along these lines, he stated that in the meeting they held in the last few hours, both with the Minister of Foreign Affairs (MRREE), Omar Paganinias with the Minister of Economy and Finance (MEF), Azucena Arbeleche, there was “good progress” in this regard. “They are clear that they cannot intervene directly, because it is a private matter, but they can help and they do,” said the export leader.

This morning a meeting was held at the headquarters of the export union in which an important group of companies that sell to the Argentina to reinforce monitoring of the issue, at a time when exports nationals are growing.
