Despite the support of three other police patrols, the driver initially managed to escape and the police lost sight of him in the Gleink area. A few minutes later, a patrol spotted him again in the Wolfernstrasse area and tried again to stop the man. When the man from Linz wanted to flee again, the police officers parked a patrol car across the road to force him to stop. The 36-year-old was able to escape again because he drove over the grass verge next to the road. He hit the patrol car that was parked across the street. He then raced back towards Garsten.
