The decision does not come as a surprise: Vice Mayor Christina Mühlböck-Oppolzer will stand for the SPÖ in the upcoming mayoral election in Wilhering. This is necessary because her father, the incumbent mayor Mario Mühlböck, has, as reported, announced his retirement after 26 years for health reasons.

Mühlböck-Oppolzer was unanimously chosen as mayoral candidate at the annual general meeting of the SPÖ Wilhering yesterday. The election is expected to take place on June 9th together with the EU elections. Mühlböck’s resignation is planned for February 27th, the date depends on the necessary deadlines. SPÖ councilor Gerald Plankenauer will succeed him on the municipal board – but this will only be possible at the municipal council meeting on March 24th. This results in a stalemate between the SPÖ and ÖVP on the municipal board for around three weeks, as Mühlböck’s mandate remains vacant during this time and the SPÖ and ÖVP then each have three members. Ronald Habermann will be the new local councilor.

“I’m not a copy of my father”
In the next few weeks, Mühlböck-Oppolzer will present her path for Wilhering. In any case, she doesn’t want to be a copy of her father. “I always wanted to go my own way,” she says. Expanding child care will continue to be a focus. Specifically, a new building is to be built next to the secondary school for the five playrooms scattered throughout the municipality. A sixth group is planned for next year. The new building will also have space for the Schönering Music Association’s rehearsal home.

Otherwise, Mühlböck-Oppolzer mentions the expansion of the transport infrastructure and support for clubs as important topics. But it’s also about seemingly small things like a dog park. When it comes to community finances, she wants to continue her father’s course and not overwhelm them with prestige projects. There are still reserves and hardly any debts, but she is aware that the scope for projects is smaller than at the beginning of her father’s term in office. Budgets should continue to be decided as unanimously as possible. She sees the limits of the community’s growth over the next ten years at 7,000 residents; currently there are just over 6,000.
“This is only possible full time”
The 40-year-old wants to be a full-time mayor if she wins the election. She will be giving up her job at Ebner, where she is responsible for apprentice training in the human resources department. “You have to be there 24/7 and that’s only possible full time,” she says. Mayor Mühlböck reiterates his announcement that he wants to withdraw completely from politics. If the results are correct (Mühlböck is suspected of having cancer), he will undergo surgery at the beginning of March. Afterwards he wants to devote himself to his hobbies of skiing and cycling and also travel the world. But first he will take care of his grandson and at least support his daughter in this way.
