The Galaxy S24 Ultra is the new top model from Samsung. The OÖN editorial team tested how it performs in everyday life and how much AI is really inside.
Appearance and processing: Compared to its predecessor, the S23 Ultra, Samsung has now dispensed with the rounded display edges. One advantage that results from this: The S-Pen, which is once again hidden in the smartphone housing, now writes better on the edges of the display. The new titanium frame is a little rougher compared to the previous models, which means the device sits comfortably in the hand. However, for most users, the smartphone will quickly disappear behind a cover anyway.
Display: The 6.8-inch screen is clearly noted in the list of pluses. The contrasts are very rich, the colors are beautiful. The fact that Samsung has increased the brightness also has a positive impact.
Camera: There is little to nothing to complain about in terms of image quality. That’s not surprising, after all the camera hasn’t changed much compared to the S23 Ultra. The results are still very good. We particularly like night photos, which look very sharp and rich in detail.
Galaxy AI: AI features are a focus of the S24. With the camera, functions such as “Generative Edit” prove to be practical and good. The option to “straighten” photos taken crookedly also works perfectly. Or the “Circle to Search” function, which proves to be quite useful in practice. Aside from Google’s Pixel devices, the Galaxy S24 is currently the only smartphone on which the feature is available.
Other AI tools still work quite imprecisely. For example “Call Translate”, which can translate text and sound into other languages, or the transcription aid. The software had problems correctly understanding or writing down what was said.
Performance and battery: The Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 delivers plenty of power, so no delays are noticeable in everyday use.
Battery pack: Many users will probably be positively surprised by the battery life. In the test, even with a refresh rate of 120 Hertz and the always-on display activated, there was usually at least 40 percent battery power left at the end of the day. If you’re thrifty, you can even go for a second day without having to charge in between. Speaking of charging: The Galaxy S24 doesn’t really turn out to be a rocket here. It takes around an hour and a half for an empty battery to be full again.
Price and conclusion: For a purchase price starting at 1,449 euros, you get a lot of AI that is sometimes useful and sometimes half-baked. Above all, you get one of the best Android smartphones currently available.
