New study: Cinema audiences are young, educated and sociable

85 percent of all 14 to 19 year olds went to the cinema at least once last year – after 81.4 percent in 2022.

All other age groups also recorded increases, although overall cinema frequency decreases with increasing age. Only 25 percent of people over 70 went to the cinema at least once last year.

This is one of the results of a current study carried out by the WKÖ trade association and the cinema advertising marketer Weischer. Cinema Austria was initiated.

Two thirds of all cinema goers are in the 14 to 49 age group. Meanwhile, people over 50 make up 34.6 percent of cinema guests. And what is seen is – perhaps not really surprising – viewed quite differently across the age pyramid.

While the adventure/action genre is seen by 76.7 percent of 14 to 29 year olds, it is “only” 56.1 percent of those over 50.

When it comes to comedies, however, the whole thing turns around. Here the number for boys is 57.7 percent, while for those over 50 years of age the figure is 61.2 percent. However, the front runners looking for something to laugh about are 30-49 year olds, 66.9 percent of whom watch comedies.

Cinema attendance increases with level of education

Another aspect of the survey is that cinema attendance increases significantly as the level of education increases. While 33 percent of the total population have a high school diploma or an even higher level of education, the number of viewers at multiplexes is 41.8 percent and at arthouse cinemas it is as much as 58.5 percent.

The vast majority do not visit the cinemas alone. Even among those over 70, only 5.9 percent go to the cinema alone and 38.1 percent with two or more people accompanying them. For 14 to 19 year olds, this number is as high as 68.5 percent.
