“Good solution”: Trial traffic light operation on B 148 becomes permanent


The B 148 Altheimer Bundesstraße is increasingly becoming a traffic hub: traffic has increased noticeably in recent years.

Those who suffer most are the residents, but also all commuters in the region. Especially with the so-called “Hofer intersection”, which connects the road in the direction of Altheim with the federal highway, there have been long waiting times, traffic jams and many accidents in the past. A traffic light should increase traffic safety. There was great skepticism, which is why a trial run was initially agreed. “I was one of the biggest skeptics”says Altheim’s FP mayor Harald Huber. But after months of trial operation, he was firmly convinced that: “This is a good solution. I also received exclusively positive feedback from the public.”

The responsible FP infrastructure regional councilor Günther Steinkellner is also satisfied: the traffic light will become a permanent fixture. “A traffic light at an intersection like this doesn’t exist anywhere in the country. And yet, it works well here because such intelligent traffic lights can regulate traffic well with modern sensor technology”he emphasizes.

18,000 fines thanks “speed camera”

The increased traffic volume on the B 148 cannot be stopped, but at least it can be alleviated through measures. The traffic light is just one of them. Regular truck checks have also resulted in up to 30 percent less heavy traffic traveling on the B 148.

“We will maintain the intensity of truck inspections in the future”, guarantees the state council. The B 148 in the Innviertel is one of the routes most frequently checked by the police, he emphasizes. The radar device in the Wenger town of Elling also proved to be effective. More than 18,000 fines have been issued since the installation of the “Blitzers” issued in March 2023. They raised 1.6 million euros.

Penalties for foreign drivers should be tightened, demands Steinkellner. “There must be equality here; it cannot be the case that we cannot collect the penalties consistently.”

Motorway expansion required

The expansion of the motorways could further noticeably reduce traffic, says Steinkellner. On the one hand, closing the gap in the German A 94 between Passau and Munich will shift transit traffic back to Bavaria, and on the other hand, expanding the Austrian A 8 to three lanes could prevent switching to the Altheimer Landesstraße. “We are a strong industrial company with a high volume of traffic. We just have to adapt the infrastructure accordingly”said FP state parliament member David Schiessl.

He is convinced that expanding the range of public transport will also increase demand, as has been seen not least in the implementation of the regional transport concept.

Speaking of public transport: regardless of the recently published plans for “New Innkreisbahn” The region’s other projects are being pushed forward across the Innviertel: The Mattigtalbahn and the Innkreisbahn will be expanded and electrified as planned, said Steinkellner.
