The serious accident occurred on Friday morning around 10:30 a.m. A retired couple from the Zwettl district was driving on the L1434 towards St. Georgen am Walde. An 85-year-old was behind the wheel and his 78-year-old wife was in the passenger seat.
In the municipality of Pabneukirchen, for unknown reasons, the car left the road in a sharp right-hand bend, hit a tree on the driver’s side and fell into the steep ditch.
Firefighters freed the couple from the wreckage
Both occupants were trapped in the vehicle and had to be freed by the fire department. The Pabneukirchen volunteer fire department was on duty for around three hours.
The couple were seriously injured and flown by rescue helicopter to two hospitals in Linz. The 78-year-old died shortly afterwards as a result of her injuries.
