RB Leipzig is slipping further and further behind a Champions League place in the German Bundesliga. The fifth-placed Saxons only managed a 2-2 draw at FC Augsburg on Saturday and are already three points behind fourth-placed Dortmund, who already won 3-0 against Freiburg on Friday. Union Berlin won 1-0 at home against Wolfsburg, Werder lost 1-2 in front of the home crowd against Heidenheim. Frankfurt – Bochum ended 1-1, Gladbach – Darmstadt ended 0-0.
The Leipzig team fell behind three days before the premier class duel with Real Madrid through Phillip Tietz (35th), but then turned things around thanks to headers from Lois Openda (39th) and Benjamin Sesko (52nd). Augsburg got an equalizer from Ermedin Demirovic (60th), and Xaver Schlager didn’t look the best in this action.

The ex-Salzburger played through, his ÖFB teammates Nicolas Seiwald (from 67th) and Christoph Baumgartner (from 84th) were substituted on. In the finish, Openda missed the great chance of Leipzig’s victory, failing with an extremely poorly executed penalty to Augsburg keeper Finn Dahmen (81′). The Red Bull Club has only scored five points from the last six rounds.
Eintracht Frankfurt is still five points behind Leipzig in sixth place. Sasa Kalajdzic was missing from Hessen’s 1-1 home draw against Bochum (with Kevin Stöger) because he was a father for the first time.
The game was about to be canceled
His compatriot Maximilian Wöber (until 72nd) couldn’t get past a 0-0 draw with Gladbach at home against bottom team Darmstadt (with Emir Karic). There were no points at all for Werder with Marco Friedl and Romano Schmid at home against Heidenheim, after all Schmid headed Bremen’s consolation goal (19th) on his club’s 125th birthday.
Union Berlin celebrated an important victory in the relegation battle without the suspended Christopher Trimmel. The capital club beat Wolfsburg 1-0, ex-ÖFB team keeper Pavao Pervan was powerless to save Danilho Doekhi’s header. Things could now get tight for Wolfsburg coach Niko Kovac.
The game was interrupted for a total of more than half an hour after supporters of both clubs repeatedly threw tennis balls onto the lawn and was about to be abandoned. Only two of the five afternoon games – in Bremen and Frankfurt – went ahead without incident.
The background to the protests is the resistance of some fan groups against the entry of an investor into the German Football League (DFL), which has been simmering for months. The investor is expected to pay one billion euros for a percentage share of the TV revenue.
