Taiwan detected a record of eight balloons Chinese around its territory, two of them flying directly over the island, announced today its Ministry of Defence.

The ministry said in a statement that the balloons were detected yesterday, on the eve of the start of the festivities of the Lunar New Yearat an altitude of between 4,500 and 11,500 meters.

It is the largest number of Chinese balloons detected by the island since it began collecting data on the matter in December, reported the AFP news agency.

In the same statement, Taiwan denounces the appearance in recent hours near the security line in the strait of five Chinese combat aircraft and four ships.

China considers the island (with a self-governing government) a part of its territory and has never renounced using force to obtain its control.

In recent years, Beijing has increased military pressure on Taiwan, deploying aircraft and warships around its territory almost daily.
