Equal Pay Day falls on Valentine’s Day this year

According to the women’s network “Business and Professional Women”, the average “gender pay gap” in Austria is 12.4 percent – an improvement compared to the 13 percent in 2023. Vienna has the smallest income gap, Vorarlberg the largest.

Female employees earn 29.5 percent, blue-collar workers 26 percent, and female contract employees earn 5.1 percent less than their male counterparts. Among civil servants, women now earn 5.8 percent more. The data for calculating the gender pay gap comes from Statistics Austria’s 2022 income report and refers to full-time employees all year round. The fact that women are more likely to work part-time does not play a role here.

The income gap varies depending on the federal state: In Vienna, Equal Pay Day took place on January 12th, in Vorarlberg it falls on March 17th. In between are Lower Austria (February 12th), Burgenland (February 14th), Carinthia (February 18th), Salzburg (February 24th), Styria (February 27th), Tyrol (March 1st) and Upper Austria (February 5th). March).
