Members of the Frankenburg Nature Conservation Association harvested around 120 kilograms of bat guano in the attic of Frein Castle over the weekend. Guano is bird or bat droppings that are considered a highly effective natural fertilizer because of their high nitrogen and phosphoric acid content. The Nature Conservation Association group makes the collected guano available to hobby gardeners for a donation. Inquiries by email to the address josef.waldl@gmx.at.
In summer, Frein Castle is home to one of the largest colonies of the greater mouse-eared bat in Upper Austria. Like all bats, it is protected. They eat countless insects every night and are important for a well-functioning ecosystem.
The animals hibernate between October and March and retreat to protected caves. “We then collect the guano because we don’t disturb the animals now,” says Josef Waldl from the Frankenburg Nature Conservation Association group.
From spring onwards the attic will be inhabited again. Every summer, around 800 females form a colony on the upper floor of the castle, raise their young there and leave behind a lot of digestive products.
