It is an eloquent work by the writer and photographer Valerie Fritsch, who was born in Graz in 1989 and is published today by Suhrkamp-Verlag. “Lemons” is the name of the new novel, in which the author uses gripping images and episodes to tell of the enormity of a love that makes you helpless and weak and keeps the other person mentally and physically dependent. Fritsch made her first public appearance with “Lemons” at the invitation of the Literaturschiff initiative in Steyr: on Friday, February 16th, from 7:30 p.m. in the Röda cultural association. Stefanie Jaksch moderates the reading and conversation with the author.
About the content: August Drach grows up in a house on the edge of the village that is both hell and paradise. The father, disappointed with himself and life, mistreats his son; he only has tenderness left for the dogs. August finds comfort in his mother, who lovingly cares for him. But when the father leaves the family, the mother’s devotion changes: she secretly puts medicine in August’s food, weakens the child and makes him sick. She expects attention and admiration from his care. Only years later does August manage to free himself from his mother’s clutches, lead an independent life and experience his first love. But how does an adult learn to solve the puzzle of a childhood in which cruelty and love are inseparable? How does he break the cycle of lying and cheating? And what happens if, years later, that person dares to go back to the source of the pain?
