Night owl (18) fell asleep while cooking in Steyr: 3 siblings in the hospital

Rescue, fire brigade and police were on duty in Steyr in the early hours of Sunday morning after fire broke out in an apartment building in the Münichholz district. At around five o’clock, an 18-year-old tenant wanted to make herself something to eat after a night of drinking. She put a pot on the stove and then went to sleep.

Brother fought flames

A little later, her 19-year-old brother was woken up by the smell of smoke. He rushed into the kitchen, discovered the fire and woke up his two sisters, the younger one is 14 years old. He then tried to fight the fire using a fire extinguisher. When that failed, the siblings fled to the neighbors and raised the alarm.

The Gleink and Münichholz fire engines from the Steyr Volunteer Fire Department arrived with 46 men and 9 vehicles. When they arrived at the scene, dark smoke was already coming from the kitchen window on the first floor. A respiratory protection team began initial extinguishing work and was able to quickly bring the fire under control.

Thanks to their quick action, the firefighters were able to prevent the fire from spreading to other premises. All three family members were taken to the Steyr Clinic for a check, the police said on Sunday afternoon.
