Ivory Coast’s incredible story as host of the Africa Cup of Nations had a happy ending: the 2-1 final win against Nigeria marked their third triumph after 1992 and 2015.
After the 4-0 defeat in the last preliminary round game against Equatorial Guinea, with which Ivory Coast finished Group A in third place, team boss Jean-Louis Gasset was fired. Nobody thought that the hosts, as one of the four best third-placed teams in the group, would still get a ticket to the round of 16. The team with Salzburg legionnaire Karim Konate accepted the gift – and their luck remained true: Senegal was defeated on penalties in the round of 16, and in the quarter-finals Ivory Coast saved itself in extra time against Mali with a goal in the final minute, and the goal in stoppage time achieved a 2-1 win.
Again Haller was the match winner
The victory in the semi-final against the Democratic Republic of Congo (1-0) with a goal from Sebastien Haller was just as deserved as the final victory – and again it was the Dortmund legionnaire who scored the decisive goal: a cross from Simon Adingra Haller deflected the ball into the goal with the tip of his foot to make it 2-1 (81′). The stoppage time lasted seven minutes – the final whistle was the starting signal for the party.
