“I didn’t know what was happening. I didn’t know how it would work either.” Clara Bonelli took a fairly relaxed approach to the EU competition “Juvenes Translatores”. The 18-year-old high school student from the Wels Franciscan Sisters was named Austria’s best young translator last week, leaving behind 82 high school students from 19 Austrian schools.
She couldn’t explain exactly where her language talent and her penchant for French came from. Clara, who still lives with her parents and siblings in Schlüßlberg, can only assume: “Maybe it’s because my grandmother comes from Belgium and I was exposed to the language from a very early age through French children’s books. But it has neither “Grandmother and my mother spoke French to me.”
The EU competition, which took place for the 17th time this year, required linguistic talent and fluent phrasing. Clara was able to convince the jury with her successful translation from French into German. “My text was about organic production and how individuals can change their consumer behavior,” says the aspiring high school graduate.
Unprepared for victory
She didn’t prepare intensively, says Clara. She wasn’t nervous at all as she completed the task quickly and precisely. Her teacher Bernadette Mayer-Baumgartner was also happy about her protégé’s victory in the demanding competition round. At the same time, she kept her fingers crossed for the language talent.
The top 27 winners were rewarded with a multi-day trip to Brussels. At the end of March we go to the EU capital. “That’s the coolest thing because one winner from each EU country comes to Brussels,” cheers Clara.
What are your plans for after graduation? “I’m still a bit hesitant. At the moment I’m planning on doing something with French, maybe even teaching.” Although she also plays the piano, music is not her career choice: “For me it’s a hobby and an outlet at the same time.” (fam)
