41-year-old Jan Siewert had to vacate his post on Monday after only three months in office. After a 1:3 defeat at VfB Stuttgart on Sunday, Mainz are eleven games without a win and are only not at the bottom of the table due to a better goal difference compared to Darmstadt 98.

Four points are missing from the relegation place and nine points from a non-relegation place.
Siewert’s successor will be presented on Tuesday afternoon, the club announced. “Unfortunately, we now see the change in the coaching position as a necessary step in order to be able to bring about a positive turnaround,” said sports director Christian Heidel before the next game against FC Augsburg on Saturday.
Siewert initially followed Bo Svensson as interim coach at the beginning of November. Shortly before Christmas, he got a contract until June 30, 2026. Except for his first game (2-0 against RB Leipzig), he didn’t win a game and drew six times. The Mainz team is threatened with their first relegation from the upper house since promotion in 2009.
