He Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MRREE) commemorated the pact today through its X account (formerly Twitter), which played a “fundamental role for the continued comprehensive development” of both sister nations.

“The Treaty set a precedent for international law in the peaceful settlement of disputes,” they expressed from the Foreign Ministry, adding that the fact “reaffirms the good relationship between both countries driven by the strong ties of friendship and cooperation that unite us.”

Likewise, they indicated that they will seek to “continue promoting the actions that are developed within the scope of the Treaty”, since this “is a priority for Uruguay“. “We hope to continue advancing jointly on all issues of interest to both countries, which also have a positive impact on the region,” the statement concludes.

Perón’s role in the signing of the Treaty of the Río de la Plata

A month and a week after having assumed his third term, the former Argentine president Peron He went to the Uruguayan capital to sign the treaty and put an end to almost a century of territorial dispute between both States, despite the illegitimacy of the eastern government.

This allowed freedom of navigation to be established for commercial and warships in the widest river in the world, as long as they were authorized by one of the parties and did not affect the national security of either town.

In his speech, Peron stated: “We have become aware of the enormous natural resources we have, whose defense and rational use creates an inalienable obligation to humanity.”
