The actions should take place decentrally in front of district and municipal offices, town halls or landmarks throughout Germany. The Fridays for Future movement is once again calling for this under the motto “Defend democracy!” on. Such an action should also take place in Linz. The original event was scheduled for February 9th.
The planned light campaign is a continuation of the rallies on January 26th in Vienna, Innsbruck and Salzburg with a total of tens of thousands of participants. “That was a very central action, now it is important to take a decentralized stance against the right in the communities”said a spokesman for Fridays For Future on Tuesday.

Trigger for the initiative “Defend democracy!” were revelations from the research center “Corrective” about a meeting of right-wing extremists on November 25th in Germany, which was attended by, among others, AfD politicians and the former head of the right-wing extremist Identitarian Movement in Austria, Martin Sellner. According to the report, there was talk of mass deportations of millions of people.

Against extremism, racism, xenophobia
The light campaign on February 25th is aimed at extremism, racism and xenophobia. Fridays For Future Austria is leading the way, says the call for action. There is also reference to the super election year. “It is right-wing extremists who are using all means to oppose climate protection, deny climate science and obviously have no plan for solving the climate crisis. We have to think about the two crises together”says Laila Kriechbaum from Fridays For Future Austria. “We therefore urge all democratic parties in this country to draw a clear red line and build the long overdue firewall in Austria”added her colleague Klara König.

Support from many sides
Despite the call for decentralized organization, there will also be familiar faces who support the campaign, it was said. Details will be announced at a later date, according to the Fridays For Future spokesman. However, one can expect similar supporters to the campaign in January. The rallies were co-organized by Black Voices and the Platform for a Humane Asylum Policy. The SPÖ, the Greens and numerous other organizations – including Caritas, the Catholic Action Austria, the ÖGB and the Chamber of Labor (AK) – had joined the call.
The Styrian one “Alliance for Human Rights and Democracy” – which organized the Graz demonstration against the right on February 3rd – will not be holding another demonstration of its own with a march for the time being, but will join the actions on February 25th. The rally on February 3rd shouldn’t have been the last, said a spokeswoman. A large number of participants meet for debriefings or future activities. According to their own count, the organizers said there were around 10,000 participants at the beginning of February. The police estimated several thousand.
