Bachmann Prize winner Maja Haderlap, who was born in Bad Eisenkappel in Carinthia, will present her new novel “Night Women” at the Arbeitswelt Museum tomorrow, Thursday, February 15th, from 7:30 p.m. In haunting images, she tells the story of the lives of three generations of women, of their entanglements in imposed and internalized models and their struggle for autonomy. The evening will be moderated by Christine Haiden.

The novel begins with Mira’s return to her home in southern Carinthia. There the protagonist has to prepare her mother to move out of the house she has lived in for decades. During the course of the stay, old traumas break open: there are the rigid dogmas of the Catholic Church. There is the mystery of Aunt Dragica, who spent her life in socialist Slovenia. And above all there is the early death of his father, who was killed by a tree when the childlike Mira was carrying his snack into the forest. For decades she blamed herself for the accident.
