More than 1,220 flights were canceled in the New York metropolitan area on Tuesday, according to the website Flight Aware. At New York’s La Guardia domestic airport, 43 percent of all connections were canceled, and there were also massive outages at JFK International Airport and Newark Airport in neighboring New Jersey.
Up to 5 centimeters of snow per hour
Since dawn, between two and five centimeters of fresh snow has fallen per hour in certain areas of the New York metropolitan area, said the National Weather Service (NWS). Because of the persistent snowfall, schools in the metropolis had to close. Public transport was increased after the population was asked to avoid private car journeys.
“Avoid unnecessary travel. If you must travel, use local transport,” said a warning from local authorities. A total of ten to 20 centimeters of fresh snow and wind gusts with speeds of 64 kilometers per hour were expected.
Rural areas cut off from the outside world
Many rural areas were cut off from the outside world by the masses of snow. As the snow continued to fall, snow plows tried to clear the streets. According to meteorologists, almost 33 centimeters of fresh snow fell in the community of Hampton Township in the state of New Jersey. In Chester, New York, the snow cover was also around 28 centimeters. According to forecasts, the snowstorm should move further south.
At Christmas 2022, more than one meter of snow fell in northern and western New York state. Dozens of people were killed, especially in the city of Buffalo on the Canadian border. Extreme and unpredictable winter and summer weather events have increased in recent years in the United States, as in the rest of the world. Experts attribute this to global climate change.
